We’ve been singing together
in York since 2017.
The repertoire is eclectic: Byrd motets and Dowland songs, jazz, African songs, Georgian harmonies, English folk, arrangements of Joy Division and new compositions.
We learn everything by ear, with Jon teaching one part at a time. Some members have sung for years; others joined with no previous experience. There’s no audition and you don’t need to read music.
Alongside weekly rehearsals, we perform concerts and take part in collaborative projects. There’s a tea break halfway through each session.

Explore the interlocking vocal traditions of the Baka people with Su Hart, singer with Baka Beyond. A full day of rhythm, listening and songs learned in the rainforests of Cameroon. Taught by ear.

OUR DIRECTOR
Jon is a composer, singer and researcher based in York. He founded the Stonegate Singers in 2017 and leads our weekly rehearsals.
His work includes choral performances on BBC Radio and collaborations with dancers, artists and archaeologists, including outdoor performances in Cornwall and at Creswell Crags.

You’re very welcome. The choir brings together people with all sorts of musical experience, including complete beginners. There’s no audition.
